Vaidya - Ayurvedic Doctor

"Ashtanga-Hridaya-Samhita" talks about four indispensable parts of healing: "doctor, medicine, doctor's assistant and the patient - these are the four pillars of healing, and each has four qualities." It is the doctor who is at the top of the list, being the most important factor in successful resolution of a health challenge.

"Charaka-samhita" compares healing without a doctor to "pottery without the potter".

We would also add that nowadays the patient is the key, while the doctor is the lock. The lock holds the possibilities, but the key needs to do the work. Healing would not be possible without the patient's willingness to change his/her ways, as this is what got them in trouble in the first place. Even the most brilliant healing protocol is useless if the patient does not follow the recommendations. From our experience, only those clients who follow the guidance, get the best results, and are pleased with themselves and the outcome.

Ayurvedic Doctor. What does it mean to be an Ayurvedic doctor? What instruments do they use?

A doctor in Ayurveda is called “vaidya”. In Sanskrit, this word literally translates as ‘knowing’. Having completed training in Ayurveda and received this title, in ancient times it was necessary to obtain permission to practice medicine and take the “Doctor’s Oath.”

The Ashtanga Hridaya Samhita sees an Ayurvedic doctor as: “Skillful, having grasped the meaning of the scriptures, having experience, pure—these are the four qualities of a doctor.”

Purity in Ayurveda, similar to the concept of “shaucha” in yoga (purity at the level of body, speech and mind), also lies in the fact that vaidya does his work not out of thirst for money, but as his duty, dharma.

What Does an Ayurvedic Consultation Look Like?

A skilled Ayurvedic Doctor is capable of using various diagnostic principles including:

Pulse diagnosis - any disease has its own “melody” that affects the pulse. An experienced doctor can recognize this melody.

Tongue diagnosis - obtaining data from the surface of the tongue. Helps determine the condition of the digestive and respiratory systems.

Iridology - reading information from the iris and other parts of the eye. Helps to assess the type of Ayurvedic constitution (prakriti), the body's energy reserves, the level of accumulated ama (toxic sludge) and pathology of internal organs.

Prana assessment - an evaluation of prana flow through the body and the identification of the blockages. As long as there is prana, there is life. This is why this assessment is of vital importance.

Samskara identification - figuring out the mental imprints that manifest as physical ailments. This requires a thorough understanding of the connection between the physical and mental bodies of an individual.

A healing plan is created individually for each client and takes into consideration all the findings, the family history, and the history of the patient.

The Healing Plan may include nutritional modifications, herbal formulas, oils, breathwork, physical dynamics, meditation techniques, and other lifestyle changes.

However, no matter what qualifications the doctor has, each person is largely responsible for his or her own health! A conscious approach to everyday choices, quality of thoughts, and the overall mindset contributes to our well-being and further development.
